La "Volkspoesie" à l'épreuve du conte romantique? Variations autour de la figure du revenant

International audienceIn a text entitled “Cirkular wegen Aufsammlung von Volkspoesie” (Circular for collecting folk poetry) published in 1815 during the Vienna Congress, Jacob Grimm and other scholars appealed to their contemporaries to write down all forms of “folk poetry,” by which they meant folktales, legends, proverbs, riddles, plays, folk songs, as well as popular traditions and practices linked to common law. The concept of “Volkspoesie,” which is vaguely defined in the 1815 text, lies at the core of the reflection of German Romantic authors, who opposed it to “Kunstpoesie” (art poetry). This was especially the case in the works of those who made the genre of the tale their own, among which the Grimm Brothers. This article aims to observe how the transition from “Volkspoesie” to “Kunstpoesie” took place in the works of the Grimm Brothers, but also of authors such as Friedrich von La Motte Fouqué or Ludwig Bechstein. We shall focus on the character of the revenant, a character who is both utterly Romantic, as he embodies the fascination for ghosts and the supernatural, and part of a long tradition of narratives conveying popular beliefs.Dans un texte publié en 1815, en marge du Congrès de Vienne, sous le titre Cirkular wegen Aufsammlung von Volkspoesie (« Circulaire en vue du collectage de la poésie populaire »), Jacob Grimm et d’autres érudits appelaient leurs contemporains à consigner par écrit toutes les formes de « poésie populaire », réunissant sous ce terme aussi bien les contes, légendes, proverbes, devinettes, jeux et chants populaires que les traditions ou les pratiques liées au droit coutumier. La notion de « Volkspoesie », dont le texte de 1815 donne une définition particulièrement vaste, est, par son opposition à celle de « Kunstpoesie » (poésie d’art), au cœur de la réflexion des écrivains romantiques allemands, en particulier chez ceux qui se sont ré-approprié le genre du conte, au premier rang desquels les frères Grimm. La présente contribution se propose d’observer comment s’opère le glissement de la « Volkspoesie » vers la « Kunstpoesie » sous la plume des frères Grimm, mais aussi d’auteurs comme Friedrich von La Motte Fouqué ou Ludwig Bechstein, à travers la figure du revenant, motif à la fois éminemment romantique, répondant à la fascination pour les fantômes et le surnaturel, et qui s’inscrit dans une longue tradition de récits vecteurs de croyances populaires
